Articolo Apparso su Focus Storia N49
Hi everybody,
I recently had the pleasure to meet “electronically” a very nice gentleman Called Paolo Zavattoni, he happenes to be a writer and an expert on Postal History of the former German East Africa. To make a long story short, this gentleman wrote an article on Italians that fought under the flags of other nations, guess who he mentions in it? Keep on reading and you will be able to download an extract of the original article that appeared on Focus Storia N49, or read my translation of it.
I would like to thank Paolo Zavattoni again for his kindness, and for making us all feel famous!

A relation?
Author : Zio FrancoYear of the story 2004
I don’t suppose you know that we have a relation racing in Formula 1? He is Baumgartner (Hungarian). Sorry to say he is not doing so well, having qualified last for Bahrain’s Grand Prix. For those ignorant Mongardis (meaning the extended family) the name Mongardi originates from Germany. Baumgartner was a mercenary who came to Italy during the Middle Ages with an army selling himself to the highest bidder. He seemed to have switched sides with considerable agility. I have an article about this scoundrel sent to me by Zia Mary several years ago (it confirms that Mongardi is a corruption of Baumgartner. So now you know that our origins are Teutonic!). If I can find this article, I shall post it on this site.
I wonder whether Baumgartner (the Hungarian) knows he has a family site on the web!
Year of the story 1981
Claudia’s Papa. I don’t know how many of you know that Claudia’s Father was a Maresciallo seconded to the Vatican responsible for the security of the Pope. The day before he was due to retire, a colleague asked him whether he would take his place protecting the Pope as there was a big do in St. Peter’s Square. Claudia’s Father generously accepted.
That was the day the Pope was shot. This so shocked Claudia’s Father that he collapsed and had the honour (??) of being rushed to the same hospital where the Pope had been taken.
I think there is a moral to this story. Never do anyone any favors the day before you are to retire!
